It was a day of emotions, applause, and golden memories as the Bayelsa State Sports Council and the Ministry of Sports Development joined forces with friends and well-wishers to celebrate Sir Braveman Wodi — the man who has become synonymous with dedication, discipline, and distinction in Bayelsa’s sports history.

The Multipurpose Sports Hall of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex came alive with colour and camaraderie as staff, athletes, government officials, and sports enthusiasts gathered to mark not just Sir Wodi’s birthday, but also his retirement after 35 years of meritorious service.
A Career Etched in Gold
From his early days in the Sports Council to his final lap as Director of Sports, Sir Braveman Wodi has been a towering figure in Bayelsa’s sporting landscape. Over the last five years, he led the Council with an unwavering commitment to excellence, ensuring that results — not rhetoric — defined his tenure.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Daniel Igali, Commissioner for Sports Development, hailed Sir Wodi as “a man of integrity who puts results above monetary gains.” He noted that their working relationship had been nothing short of seamless, describing Wodi as meticulous, dependable, and an unparalleled problem-solver. “He’s the most committed person I have ever worked with,” Igali said, revealing that Governor Douye Diri himself holds the celebrant in the highest regard.
Family Pride and Gratitude
For Mrs. Irene Wodi, the day was a double blessing — celebrating her husband’s achievements while looking forward to spending more time together. “I thank God for his life, and I’m happy I’ll be seeing more of him now,” she said with a smile.
A visibly moved Sir Wodi expressed deep gratitude for the love shown to him, admitting that the scale of the celebration exceeded his expectations. He reflected on the challenges of balancing work and family, but described his journey as deeply fulfilling.
Tributes from All Corners
The event also featured goodwill messages from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Development, Mrs. Grace Alagoa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Chief Patimidi Tukuru, the HOD of Organizing, Mr. Andrew Aye, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Alaowei Opukume, and the Chairman of the Coaches Association, Mr. Doubara Otuku — all of whom praised Wodi as a “thoroughbred sports administrator”.
A Poetic Highpoint
The celebration reached a touching climax with the presentation of gifts to the celebrant and a heartfelt poem recited by his son, Diepreye Wodi, sealing the day as one of warmth, respect, and legacy.
As the curtain falls on Sir Braveman Wodi’s official career, one thing is certain — his footprints in Bayelsa sports will endure far beyond his years of service.
