BRIEF HISTORY OF WEIGHTLIFTING
Weightlifting was first introduced in the Olympics in the 1896 Athens Olympic Games as a part of track and field, and was officially recognized as its own event in 1914.
The 1960s saw the gradual introduction of exercise machine into the still-rane strength training gyms of the time weightlifting have a lengthy history for many prehistoric tribes, the traditional test of manhood was the lifting of special rock name of the first lifters incised, exist in Greece and in Scottish Castles.
The competitive lifting of stones still persist locally in Germany, Switzerland and highlands of Montenegro, and the Basque region of Spain. In many such events the consecutive number of lifts within a given time period is used to declare a winner.The origin of modern weightlifting competition are to be found in the 18th and 19th – century; strong men, such as Eugene Saradow and Arthur Saxon of Germany, George and Louis Apollon of France, who performed in circuses and theatres. In 1891 there was International Competition in London. The revived Olympic Games of 1896 included
weightlifting events, as did the Games of 1900 and 1904, but thereafter, these events were suspended until 1920. In that year, at the suggestion of International Olympic Committee, the International Weightlifting Federation (Federation Haltcorphile Internatioanl (FHI) was formed to regularize events and supervise international competition. The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, otherwise known as NWF, is the national governing body that oversees the sport of weightlifting in Nigeria. The origins of modern weightlifting competition are to be found in the 18th and 19th century strong men such as Eugene Sandow and Arthur Saxon of India.

In Bayelsa State weightlifting come to stay when our men and women start to win medal from 2002 till date where champion who have make the state proud both in national and Africa competition indeed. One such athlete is David Adeyemo who is right now in the U.S. Army permanently as the U.S. Marine weightlighting coach.
Some of our sports secretaries and coaches work hard to bring these to limelight, these are Late George Nat Ayerite (Secretary), Freedom Peregbe (Secretary), Bariwene K. (Secretary), Seiyefa Apele (Secretary),etc; Coach Anderson Beribebe, Coach John Bull Bossa, Coach Michael Okringo, etc.
