Bayelsa State has etched its name in history as the champions of the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival, a prestigious event organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

On Monday, the curtains closed on a thrilling competition, with Team Bayelsa securing a commanding 89 medals42 gold, 29 silver, and 15 bronze—finishing atop the medal table. Delta State closely followed in second place with 41 gold, 26 silver, and 32 bronze, while Edo, Rivers, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Imo, and Cross River rounded out the standings.

Bayelsa’s Unwavering Spirit: A Triumph of Dedication and Hard Work

Speaking at the Uyo Township Stadium after the trophy presentation, Bayelsa’s Director of Sports, Sir Braveman Wodi, attributed the victory to the synergy between the state government, sports administrators, and the athletes.

“This victory is a testament to the tireless dedication and hard work of our athletes and coaches. Their commitment to excellence has paid off, and God has crowned their efforts with this trophy,” Sir Wodi declared.

He praised Governor Senator Douye Diri, describing him as a sports visionary whose commitment to sports development has transformed the subsector, alongside Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and Sports Development Commissioner Hon. Daniel Igali.

“From the onset, we knew we had what it takes. In the first five days, we were second. But we regrouped, strategized, and rose to the top. Though Delta fought hard, we never looked back, maintaining our lead to the very end.”

Impact on Bayelsa’s Sporting Future

Sir Wodi emphasized that winning the Niger Delta Sports Festival will boost morale ahead of the National Sports Festival, where Bayelsa hopes to dominate yet again.

“This was a closed competition under-25, but the National Sports Festival is an open contest where Nigerians in the diaspora can compete. We are ready to take on the challenge and hold our ground.”

A Call for More Sporting Opportunities

The Director of Sports commended the NDDC for successfully hosting the festival, urging that it be made an annual event to create more opportunities for youth development in sports.

“This festival has shown the potential of young athletes. If hosted annually, it will give more talents the chance to shine and contribute to the growth of sports in Nigeria.”
