Meet Mr. Andrew Odenyefa Aye – A Visionary Leader, Athlete, and Sports Administrator Extraordinaire
In a quiet but momentous ceremony held on Thursday, August 14th, 2025, the Bayelsa State Sports Council ushered in a new era of leadership as Sir Braveman Wodi officially handed over the reins to his successor, Mr. Andrew Odenyefa Aye, at the Director’s Office. With this transition, the Council welcomes its 12th Director of Sports—an accomplished sportsman, seasoned administrator, and proud son of Bayelsa.


Roots and Education
Mr. Aye hails from the historic Biseni Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. His journey into the world of sports began with academic excellence at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he earned a B.A. in Physical Education in 1993. His passion for sports was not just theoretical—it was lived, practiced, and perfected.
From Athlete to Administrator
A titan on the hockey field, Mr. Aye as fondly called is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s finest hockey players, representing the nation as an international athlete from 1992 to 2003. His discipline, leadership, and tactical brilliance on the field laid the foundation for a seamless transition into sports administration.
In 1995, he began his professional career as an Instructor at the Rivers State Sports Institute, Isaka, where he nurtured young talents and promoted physical education. His administrative prowess came to the fore during his tenure as Secretary of Bayelsa United Football Club (2007–2011), where he played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence and eventual qualification to the Premier League in 2013.
Leadership and Service
Before his appointment as Acting Director, Mr. Aye served in multiple strategic roles within the Council, including Head of Department, Organizing, where he was instrumental in coordinating major sporting events and programs across the state. His commitment to holistic sports development was further demonstrated through his role as Chairman of the National Association of Physical and Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHERSD), Bayelsa State Chapter.

Personal Life
Beyond the field and office, Mr. Aye is a devoted family man. He is happily married, and the union is blessed with a daughter who shares his love for sports and excellence.
