The Bayelsa State Wrestling Team emerged as the overall champions of the 3rd Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics, which took place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from November 5th to 9th, 2024.
Dominating the national wrestling championships, the Bayelsa team scored 210 points in freestyle wrestling, 240 points in Greco-Roman, and 210 points in women’s wrestling, showcasing their strength across all categories.
Governor Douye Diri, in his address, highlighted the crucial role of sports in national development and commended the Nigerian Wrestling Federation under the leadership of Daniel Igali for their continued efforts to elevate the sport. He emphasized the importance of investing in youth through sports, noting its significant impact on human capital development.
In recognition of their achievements, Governor Diri awarded a ₦1 million cash prize to Ebikewenimo Welson, Bayelsa’s gold medalist in the 57kg freestyle category, honoring his exceptional performance and sportsmanship.
