On behalf of the Bayelsa State Government, the Ministry of Sports Development and the State Sports Council I warmly welcome you to this year’s edition of the Olympic Day celebration.
The Olympic Day is a global event that commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Movement, founded by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. This year’s global celebration holds special significance as it precedes the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Nigerian athletes will compete and inspire the world with their achievements.
Olympic Day is a chance for people of all ages and abilities to experience the magic of the Olympic Games in their own communities imbued with funfares. It is an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activity and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
The day is targeted in engaging exercises, promoting health and fitness for all, jogging and walking to burn calories, tone up muscles to shape the body and help de-stress of the mind.The Olympic Day event is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promise in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.
I am happy with the massive turn out of this year’s Olympic day in Bayelsa State. The turn out of the 2024 Olympic day has further portrayed the core values and the significance of the Pierre de Coubertin. As a council, we will continue to dwell on the path of prosperity to consolidate on the achievement of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri to engage Bayelsa youths through sports.
As you are aware, Bayelsa State in the last four years has become title contenders in any competition both in national and international events, this is as a result of the dedication of the athletes of the State.
On this very special Olympic Day, let us celebrate the joy that only sport can give us.
We shall not fail to thank His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri and Deputy, H.E Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo for making this event happen, also to our Hon.Commissioner Hon.Daniel Igali, our guest from outside the shores of of Bayelsa, Mr Patrick Ibeh -the representative of the Nigerian Olympic Committee -Sports for All Commission’s President and our Zonal Coordinator, South-South Mr Essiet Ubong Sylvester,all athletes and other participants.
