Protocol.

On behalf of the Bayelsa State Government, the Ministry of Sports Development and the Bayelsa State Sports Council, I warmly welcome you to this year’s edition of the Olympic Day run celebration.

The Olympic Day is a global event that commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Movement, founded by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. This year’s global celebration holds special significance as we move close to the 2026 Olympics games in the United States of America.

On this Olympic Day, marked by the global theme “Move, Learn, Discover Together for a Better World” the Olympic Movement gathered not only to celebrate its annual tradition, but to witness a truly historic moment.

Olympic Day provides opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to experience the magic of the Olympic Games in their own communities, diffuse with funfares. It is an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activity and the real values of Olympics which deals with excellence, friendship, and respect.

Ladies and gentlemen, in recent decades, there has been a gradual decline in the level of physical activity in people’s daily lives due to technological advancement in all facets of life. Over reliance on modern gadgets comes with health risks and resultant diseases, that is why the Bayelsa state Government has continued to give premium attention to the weekly prosperity walk.

The day is targeted in engaging exercises, promoting health and fitness for all, jogging and walking to burn calories, tone up muscles to shape the body and help de-stress of the mind. The Olympic Day event is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promise in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.

I am overwhelmed with the massive turn out of this year’s Olympic day in Bayelsa State. The turn out of the 2025 Olympic day has further defined the core values and the significance of the Pierre de Coubertin ideals. As a council, we will continue to dwell on the Governor’s “Assured Mantra” to consolidate on the achievements of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri using sports as a vehicle to engage the youths.

Let me equally use this opportunity to appreciate all the athletes, coaches in the state for your steadfast commitment in the just concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Your determination compliments the Governor’s unparalleled passion for sports.

As you are aware, Bayelsa State in the last four years has become title contenders in any competition both in national and international events, this is as a result of the dedication of the athletes of the State.

On this very special Olympic Day, let us celebrate the joy that only sport can give us.

We shall not fail to thank His Excellency, Sen. Douye Diri and Deputy, H.E Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo for making this event happen. To our Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Daniel Igali, our guest from outside the shores of Bayelsa Mrs Emem ,the representative of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, and our Zonal Coordinator, South-South, Mr. Peter Njouku, all athletes and other participants we say
