BAYELSA STATE JUDO ASSOCIATION
Judo is a Japanese Martial Art sport that involves having to throw your opponent to the ground, chokes and joint locks. It’s a modern sport that can be practiced for competition, recreation or self-defense.
Judo as a sport is practiced locally, nationally and internationally. It became an Olympic sport in the year 1964.
Here in Bayelsa State, Judo has been from the inception of the state with the pioneer Head Coach of the sport Association being Coach Emmanuel Ekpokoba. The association has been blessed with other notable national and international champions like Tonari Green, the late Irigha Eferebo, Dennis Yongosi, Mamoke Ekwunife, etc.
Judo as a sporting association has recorded many successes and won laurels for the state in National Sports Festivals, Senior National Championships as well as in junior and cadets cadre.

COMPOSITION OF JUDO ASSOCIATION
The Association is headed by a Chairman, with the day to day administrative affairs handled by an Organizing Secretary. The Head Coach is the Technical head with other Assistant or Associate Coaches at the state level. There are zonal coaches covering the Local Government Areas as well as Institutional Coaches overseeing training in academic institutions.
RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS
The state Judo Association placed 3rd in the 20th National Sports Festival “Edo 2020” with 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals.
In the Commonwealth Games National Trials held in lagos, the state came 1st position with 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal.
In the 21st Edition of the National Sports Festival tagged “Asaba 2022”, the state judo Association placed 2nd position with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and # Bronze medals.
With Judo included as one of the 15 sports that participated in the Just concluded State Sports Festival, the Association successfully hosted the judo event to discover new champions in various weight categories.
NEEDS
With the discoveries of the just concluded state sports festival, it has become vivid that the popularity of the sport has grown within the state capital and its environs, hence it becomes expedient to procure a new set of judo mats, Gis and other equipment to allow for proper training with the increasing number of judo athletes.
