Azeez Solanke has solidified his status as the number-one ranked player of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association (BYSTTA) over the past three years, playing a pivotal role in the association’s growth and success. Known for his discipline, talent, and consistency, Solanke has made a significant mark on both national and international stages, establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s premier players.

Early Career and International Breakthrough

Solanke’s journey began with impressive performances at the cadet and junior levels. In 2016, he won a silver medal at the World Cadet Championship, marking his arrival on the global scene. His accolades continued with multiple medals at the African Junior Championships in 2017 and 2018, and he showcased his skills in the World Junior Circuit that same year.

Transitioning to senior competitions, Solanke quickly became an essential member of the Nigerian national team. In 2019, he and BYSTTA captain Samuel Boboye finished as runners-up at the Africa Senior Championship in Cameroon. By 2021, he had amassed several medals at the African Senior Championships, reinforcing his position among Africa’s elite players. His contributions to the ITTF Africa Cup and African Games have helped Nigeria maintain its dominance over competitors like Egypt and Senegal.

National Success and Recent Achievements

On the national level, Solanke has shone at the National Sports Festival, winning two gold medals and one silver in 2020. He continued his success at the 2022 edition, earning one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Most recently, in July 2024, he clinched gold in the men’s singles event at the National Open Competition in Ibadan, further cementing his status as a top competitor domestically.

Solanke’s international achievements are equally impressive. In 2018, he represented Nigeria at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, competing in both singles and mixed team events alongside Esther Oribamise. A major milestone came in 2024 when he became the first African to reach the finals of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Championship, earning a silver medal in men’s doubles. His ongoing participation in ITTF events continues to elevate his profile, indicating a bright future on the world stage.

Inspiring the Next Generation

In 2024, Solanke also finished as the first runner-up at the Nigeria Top 16 Player Tournament in Lagos, showcasing his unwavering consistency. His journey reflects a combination of talent, discipline, and perseverance, making him a cornerstone of BYSTTA and Nigeria’s table tennis community.

His influence extends to his younger brother, Oweifa Solanke, a promising left-handed player on BYSTTA’s junior team. Oweifa, adopted by BYSTTA four years ago, has proudly represented Bayelsa and is set to start his university education at Niger Delta University (NDU) alongside five other athletes. To support their development, BYSTTA plans to provide an NIS-certified coach at NDU for structured training while they pursue their studies.

Azeez Solanke’s evolution from a talented cadet to an elite senior athlete exemplifies his commitment to excellence. As BYSTTA’s top player, he is not only a model of personal achievement but also a symbol of the association’s progress, inspiring younger players like Oweifa to chase their dreams. With BYSTTA’s continued support, Solanke’s future in table tennis shines brighter than ever.
