The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially inaugurated the organizing committee for the highly anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival, scheduled to take place from April 1st to 5th, 2025, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
At the inauguration ceremony, Hon. Alabo Boma Iyaye, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, urged the committee members to work with dedication and precision to ensure the festival’s success. He highlighted the Niger Delta region’s history of producing exceptional individuals who have made notable contributions to sports and the nation. “You have been carefully selected for your expertise in sports development and event management. This committee’s role is critical in ensuring a well-executed event. The Niger Delta region has long been home to athletes who have brought pride to our country, but there has been a gap in developing such talents. The NDDC is committed to filling that gap,” he stated.
Hon. Daniel Igali, the Commissioner of Sports for Bayelsa State, spoke on behalf of the nine sports commissioners from the NDDC’s mandated states. He expressed his appreciation for the commission’s effort in organizing the inaugural festival in the region. “We commend the NDDC for this visionary initiative. This is the first time in Nigeria’s history that a regional sports festival of this magnitude will be held. It is an event that promises to elevate sports in the region, providing a platform for youth development and contributing to the reduction of criminal activities,” he remarked.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo will be a cornerstone event, marking the 25th anniversary of the NDDC’s establishment, and it is expected to usher in a new era for sports in the region.
