BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAYELSA STATE SCRABBLE ASSOCIATION

It is on record that SCRABBLE is an academic cum intellectual Board game that boosts the use of words and their meanings. This helps to develop the mind and inculcate good reading culture, in other words, SCRABBLE is a MIND GAME!

It might interest you to know that, the Bayelsa State Scrabble was formed November 15th 1999.

The first Chairman was late Barr. Abila and Vice Chairman was Collins Boleigha.

Mr. Bibowei Harrison Lambert was the 1st Head Coach of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association.

oUR GOALS

  • Opportunity to participate in International and world Scrabble Championship by Bayelsa State Scrabble Players.
  • To introduce Scrabble as an intellectual sport to the Schools which will help to influence the minds of our youths from social vices.
  • Making sure Scrabble gets to the nooks and cranny of all the Local Government Areas in Bayelsa State via talent hunting (Catching them young)

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • At Bauchi 2000 National Sports Festival, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association was supposed to be amongst the State contingent but was dropped due to financial constraint.
  • In EDO 2002 National Sports Festival, Bayelsa State Scrabble Association participated and won a SILVER and BRONZE Medal. (Preyer Okorodas – Silver & Barr. Timi Woko Bronze Medals).
  • At the 2004 Abuja National Sports Festival, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association participated and won one BRONZE medal by Barr. Timi Woko in the Intermediate Category.
  • At the 2006 Gateway Games Abeokuta, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association won its first GOLD medal by Preye Okorodas; the present Head Coach of the Association.
  • In 2012 EKO Lagos National Sports Festival, the Association won 2 team GOLD and 2 BRONZE medals in different categories as stated below;
  • Masters – Barr. Timi Woko, Youpele Youpele and Precious Igali
  • Intermediate – Doubra Enai, Preye Okorodas and Ben Quickpen
  • Single event – Ben Quickpen (Bronze)
  • Single event female – Dorcas Ekaba Innocent (Bronze)
  • In 2018 Abuja National Sports Festival, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association won a GOLD and team SILVER medal by:
  • Single event – Precious Igali (Gold)
  • Team Silver – Iteimo Birigeni, Onu Jeffrey and Tariye Alari
  • At EDO 2020 National Sports Festival, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association won 1 team GOLD, 4 SILVER and 3 BRONZE Medals by:
  • Iteimo Birigeni, Jeffrey Onu T. and Tariye Alari (Team Gold)
  • Vincent Munayo and Aniso Joe (Double event – Silver)
  • Vincent Munanayo, Youpele Youpele and Joe Aniso (Team Silver)
  • Barr. Timi Woko, Ben Quickpen and Precious Igali (Team Silver)
  • Iteimo Birigeni (Single event – Bronze)
  • Alatari Tariye and Iteimo Birigeni (Double event – Bronze)
  • Dorcas Innocent, Mallas Akpos and Juliana Imbiakpa (Team Bronze)
  • At Asaba 2022, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association won 2 GOLD, 1 SILVER and 2 BRONZE Medals won by:
  • Malafakumo Akpos Best – Single event (Gold)
  • Peredebafa Daunemighan – Most Valuable Player (MVP – Silver)
  • Malafakumo Akpos Best – Most Valuable Player (Female – Bronze)
  • Dorcas Innocent and Malafakumo Akpos – (Doubles event – Bronze)

Besides the National Sports Festival achievements mentioned above, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association also participated in National Championships and International Classics namely;

  • The Governor Godswill Akpabio International classic 2007 – 2015.
  • In 2012 Ben Quickpen won the Opens Category and was crowned the Champion.
  • In 2014, Dorcas Ekaba Innocent won the Female Category and was crowned as the female Champion.
  • The Bayelsa State Scrabble Association also hosted the Governor Douye Diri National Open Championship and in the 2nd edition Mr. Douglas Borogha of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association won the Opens Category and was crowned the Champion in 2022.

CHALLENGES

  • Training venue is not big and not conducive enough for players to train effectively.
  • Lack of equipment
  • Lack of funds to cater for Athletes welfare.
