In a spirited celebration of excellence and determination, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State was formally presented with the championship trophy of the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival, held in the vibrant city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event marked a historic milestone as Bayelsa State emerged the overall winner, rising above intense competition from across the region.
The gleaming trophy was handed over by Champion Daniel Igali, Bayelsa’s Commissioner for Sports Development, during the 161st State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa, sparking scenes of excitement and pride among council members and sports stakeholders.
Governor Diri, visibly elated, commended the winning team and encouraged them to aim even higher, calling for continued excellence in upcoming editions of the festival and on the national stage. He praised the athletes, officials, and organizers for setting a remarkable precedent in the state’s sporting journey.
“This is a proud moment for Bayelsa,” the Governor said. “We have, for the first time, outshined even Delta State—an achievement that will be remembered for years to come. On behalf of the entire state, I extend heartfelt appreciation to all who contributed to this remarkable feat.”
The governor also acknowledged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for their innovative vision in launching and hosting the festival. He highlighted the Commission’s unique approach—covering all logistics and relieving states of financial obligations—as a commendable step toward youth empowerment and regional unity through sports.
“The NDDC has taken a giant leap with this initiative. It’s more than a competition—it’s a call to action for the youth and a testament to what collaboration can achieve,” Governor Diri noted.
