BRIEF HISTORY
Bayelsa State was carved out of the former Rivers State in 1996, and with its creation came the necessity to develop an infrastructure that would foster the growth and development of sports within the newly established state. In response to this need, the Bayelsa State Government established the Bayelsa State Sports Council through the Bayelsa State Sports Council Edict of 1999.
Since its inception, the Sports Council has been tasked with overseeing and promoting amateur sports across the state, ensuring that Bayelsa’s athletes are provided with the necessary resources, facilities, and support to excel. With a dedicated workforce of 312 staff members, the Council has grown into a vital institution, shaping the state’s sports landscape.
The Sports Council’s headquarters is located at the iconic Samson Siasia Stadium, a hub for athletic development and sporting events. Additionally, the Council maintains zonal offices across all eight Local Government Areas of Bayelsa, ensuring that the reach of sports development extends to every corner of the state. This strategic structure allows the Sports Council to effectively manage and promote sporting activities, from grassroots initiatives to elite competition levels.
