BRIEF HISTORY

Bayelsa State was a State created out of the former old Rivers State. At the creation of Bayelsa state in 1996, there was the need to have its own Sports Council to cater for the sporting needs of the State.

Therefore, the State Sports Council was thus established by the Bayelsa State Sports Council edict of 1999 by the state government. Since then the Council has superintended over all the Amateur Sporting needs of the State. The Sports Council currently has a staff strength of three hundred and twelve (312).

The Sports Council Headquarter is cited at the Samson Siasia Stadium with Zonal Offices in all the eight Local Government Areas of the State.

To encourage the development and organization of sports participations in the state;
To co-ordinate and integrate efforts to raise the standard of performance in sports throughout the state and Nigeria in cooperation with sports councils and national sports commissions of Nigeria;
Promoting, in cooperation with other bodies or sports groups in physical fitness and general well being of all persons in the state;
To organize or assist financially or otherwise, particular in sports at local, state and international level;
To train persons to become sportsmen and instructors in sports;
Conducting and encouraging research into all matters in relation to sports development;
To ensure the participation of all sportsmen where required by local, state, national or international competitions.
