Bayelsa United clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ikorodu City on Matchday 16 of the 2024/25 NPFL season, thanks to Rabiu Abdullahi’s late header at the Samson Siasia Stadium today.
The match kicked off with both teams adopting a cautious approach, resulting in few clear chances during the first half. Ikorodu City had the first significant opportunity, but their tame shot was easily saved by Bayelsa Unitedโs goalkeeper, Godgift Elkanah. The Prosperity Boys’ best chance came in the 38th minute when Emo James narrowly missed connecting with a diving header from a well-placed cross.
As the second half began, Ikorodu City made attacking changes in search of a breakthrough, but it was Bayelsa United who emerged more determined. Rabiu Abdullahi tested the goalkeeper within minutes of the restart, signaling the home sideโs intent to secure the win.
The Prosperity Boys continued to pile on the pressure, and in the 65th minute, they felt they deserved a penalty after a defender appeared to handle the ball, but the referee waved play on.

Bayelsa United’s relentless efforts finally paid off in the 79th minute. Abdullahi rose above the defense to meet a perfectly delivered cross and headed past the onrushing goalkeeper, giving his side a crucial lead.
Despite a late surge from Ikorodu City, Bayelsa United held firm to secure all three points. The victory not only lifted them to 10th in the standings but also marked back-to-back home wins, providing a much-needed boost to their season.
